There s a wide range of services, companies and terminology when it comes to home services in America. We re here to help you understand what s available in your local area including understanding who the different cable and internet companies are and what sort of package you need. However, if you are confused over what you need and what the different types of service are here s a rundown on what s out there and what some of the jargon means:
High speed internet: This term is interchangeable with broadband and refers to a type of internet connection that is much faster than dial-up although almost internet service providers now offer only broadband and very few dial-up. Think of dial-up as a small country lane and high speed internet as a huge freeway where traffic can move quickly in both directions. For this analogy the traffic is data. Data describes the information you send and receive over the internet and the more data you send and receive the faster the connection you need. Broadband has more bandwidth meaning it can transfer data at a higher speed, in fact in the early days of this technology it was often call wide band and dial-up was sometimes referred to as narrow band. A higher bandwidth means more speed which is measured in a unit called Mbps and the greater this is the faster your connection can send and receive data.
So what does all of this mean when choosing a high speed internet provider. Almost anything you do online will involve either downloading and/or uploading data. This includes everything from emails and viewing a new web page every time you visit a new webpage your connection downloads it which require relatively small amounts of data to activities like downloading or watching movies online and using VoIP Voice over IP services like Skype to make calls over the internet which require much more data. This means that if you are what we call a light internet user and don t need much data, for example you mainly view the web, use social media, email and maybe watch a few video clips on services like YouTube then one of the cheap internet packages with lower download speeds should be fine for what you need. However, if you download lots of movies and enjoy online games it s worth paying a little more for a faster connection. There are 3 main types of technology that provide home broadband services with various companies offering different options, these are satellite, cable also called fiber optic, and DSL. We will cover the difference between these later.
Wireless internet providers and wireless broadband: These two terms can be a little confusing as both can have two meanings. Nowadays most internet service providers ISPs who offer fixed broadband via a cable internet connection also called fiber optic, DSL line or even satellite supply a wireless router as part of the package. This means that although a fixed line will bring the service in to your household the wireless router will allow you to connect you desktop, laptop, tablet, TV if it is wireless enabled or phone to the internet without the need for wires. One big advantage is that you can connect multiple devices in the same property at the same time. You can use Broadband Expert to search for wireless internet providers by zip code to see what deals are available in your local area. The second meaning of this term refers to:
Mobile broadband or mobile internet as it is also called. This describes the wireless networks provided by the cell phone companies that connect your mobile device using a technology called 3G or the superior and much faster 4G if it is available in your area. Companies like AT T Wireless, T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint offer these services. You can compare mobile broadband plans here.
Cable, DSL and Satellite, what are they and which should I choose.
Sadly for many parts of the United States the choice of access providers can be limited however if you are happy to consider DSL, satellite or cable providers then you will usually have some choice. Firstly put your address including the zip code in to our availability checker so get an idea of which providers and plans cover your area. You should now see a list of deals which you can easily compare from various internet companies and satellite providers. Before making a decision it s worth understanding a little about the different options:
DSL: This is the most widely available type of connection in the US and a number of DSL providers supply high speed internet, phone and TV bundles so you can have one package covering all of your digital needs. DSL internet is widespread since it uses the existing copper phone lines meaning that most households will have access. Speeds are determined by a number of factors but a key one is how far down the copper wire the data needs to travel from the local telephone exchange to your property, this means that people in rural areas who are often further from their local phone exchange have slower speeds. Although it is usually slower than cable, if you are in large town or city you should be able to get good DSL speeds which are adequate for most types of usage. Some of the main providers include AT T internet and Verizon internet.
Cable: As with DSL many suppliers bundle cable TV, internet and phone together so you can have all three services from one company triple play. The largest cable companies in the US include XFINITY, Charter and Time Warner Cable. Cable internet providers use fiber optic technology, this has a higher bandwidth and can deliver faster speeds than DSL whilst not suffering from the same speed degradation as data travels along the lines. If speed is your main concern then going for a provider who delivers a fiber optic line directly to your household will give you the best speeds. Some of the fastest services include Comcast internet plans although they have recently rebranded as Xfinity. Most lines rely on copper lines to deliver the final part of the connection to a property which restricts the maximum speed however a growing number of ISPs are providing superfast services which run the fiber optic cable all the way to your home. For most people who don t need lightning fast speeds the main issue will be price, reliability, customer service and choice of packages and one of the standard range of packages from any of the cable internet providers should be sufficient. Other providers include Time Warner internet who are one of the larger companies with Charter internet and the Cox cable service also having reasonable coverage. If you are bundling TV services in with your deal satellite providers offer some competitive alternatives. You can check out bundles in our internet, phone and TV bundles section.
Satellite: The big two satellite TV providers are DISH and DIRECTV who partner with local internet providers so you can order TV, internet and phone services together. At present there is mounting competition between the cable and satellite providers meaning there are some great, cheap deals to be had. The type of internet connection you will receive depends on which local ISP the provider is partnered with. If you live in a rural area with no coverage from the main ISPs then satellite internet may be your only option. Satellite internet is different service which provides an internet connection via a satellite dish. Speeds are typically slower and more expensive although they are now improving. The main satellite internet providers include HughestNet, WildBlue and Starband.
